The Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI) was firstly established as Science and Technology Development Institute Establishment Project in July 1985, under the approval from the Council of Deans.
The operating committee consisted of representatives from the 3 initiating faculties; Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agriculture and Faculty of Engineering. The Board of Committee of the project comprises of the President of Chiangmai University as a Chairperson (at that time was Professor Arwut Srisugree, MD), 3 experts from the 3 initiating faculties as well as one representative from these faculties. The initiating budget was allocated from the revenue budget of the university for the Office of the University. The provisional office was located at the Fast Neutron Research Facility, Department of Physics, Faculty of Science.
Then on 21 September 1987, the institute was officially established as The Science and Technology Research Institute (STRI), and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thiraphat Vilaithaong from Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, became the first Director of the institute. Then the Project Office was relocated in October 1993 to the current location at the Research and Graduate Studies Building.
In 2008, the Institute for Science and Technology Research and Development is formally changed to the Science and Technology Research Institute.
